Renting Energy vs Burning TRX on TRON: The Real Numbers

Renting energy beats burning TRX only on short periods. At today's wholesale rate, a 1-hour rental runs `35` sun per unit against `100` sun burned per unit, about 65% less. A 1-day rental costs the same `100` sun per unit as burning, before any service margin, so it saves nothing on one transfer. Longer periods only pay off across many transfers, not a single one.

The wholesale rate right now

Our energy supplier prices delegated energy by period. Four periods exist: one hour, one day, three days, thirty days. Each has its own rate in sun per unit of energy, taken straight from the supplier’s live price list.

The two energy amounts are the same ones from why USDT transfers cost TRX: 65 000 for a recipient who already held USDT, 131 000 for one who never did.

Set against burning

Burning TRX runs at the network’s getEnergyFee rate. Right now that rate is 100 sun per unit, taken live from getchainparameters. So burning a single transfer costs 6.5 TRX or 13.1 TRX, depending on the recipient. Compare that to the table above, and the picture is direct:

  • The 1-hour tier is cheaper than burning either way. About 65% cheaper, in fact.
  • The 1-day tier costs exactly what burning costs, 100 sun per unit either way. No saving, before any service fee on top.
  • The 3-day and 30-day tiers cost more than a single burn. On one transfer, they lose.

When renting does not help

A single transfer, paid for with a multi-day rental, is a bad trade. The 3-day tier prices at 195 sun per unit, nearly double the burn rate. The 30-day tier prices at 1 650 sun per unit, sixteen times the burn rate. Add a service margin on top of either, and the gap only widens. If you send USDT once and don’t expect to send it again soon, burning TRX or renting the 1-hour tier are your only sensible options.

When it clearly helps

Multi-day rentals pay off once you cross a break-even count of transfers within the period. The rule is simple: divide the tier’s total sun-per-unit rate by 100, the burn rate. That gives the number of transfers needed to break even, and it holds regardless of whether recipients are old or new, because both sides of the comparison scale by the same energy amount.

Two transfers to the same or different addresses within three days already make the 3-day tier worth it over burning twice. Seventeen transfers in a month make the 30-day tier worth it over burning seventeen times. Below that count, burning still wins.

The margin on top

Every number above is our supplier’s wholesale rate, not the price a customer pays. Any rental service, ours included, adds its own margin on top. That margin can close the 1-hour tier’s advantage partway, and it makes the break-even counts above a floor, not a guarantee. Check the live quote before deciding.
